Today’s Spotlight is on the wonderful and passionate Meggie McKay!
Meggie has been a member of our QAAW community since back in 2010. “I became involved with Quick As A Wink with Golf: The Musical,” Meggie says. “Michelle Herx and my mother had a friend in common who put me in touch with them, and so my first Quick As A Wink role was a 'hooker' in the Golf show, which was out of my comfort zone, to say the least!” Meggie has since remained actively involved with QAAW, both by playing French Horn in various pit bands and by appearing onstage in many musical productions including Glory Days, The Secret Garden, and You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.
When it comes to theatre, Meggie greatly values the teamwork that goes into making every show a success. “I like how live theatre involves a whole community, and how it brings people together,” she says. “Putting on a production requires so many different types of people, with so many different talents and passions, that you get to meet exciting new friends in every single show. Theatre tends to attract passionate, thrilling, and inspirational people, and it's always a joy to work with such wonderful weirdos!”
Meggie herself has also found great enjoyment and success in the world of theatre. “My favourite theatre accomplishment - I've got two favourites! - actually happened this past summer!” she says. “I landed a professional gig as Evangeline in the Canadian premiere of the opera Evangeline by Gwyneth Walker. I got to work with a very talented cast of singers and musicians, and I got to meet and work with the composer herself. The performances took place in the historic Covenanter Church in Grand Pre, which is an important piece of Acadian history, so that was very exciting. My other favourite moment was performing as Lucy in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. It was hands down the most fun I've ever had on stage!”
Despite her accomplishments, Meggie is in no way ready to shy away from the world of performance just yet. In fact, she has specific roles and challenges she would love to one day tackle. “My dream role is the Queen of the Night from Mozart's The Magic Flute, because she is delightfully wicked and angry and frightening,” Meggie says. “The Queen sings some of the most epic and vocally demanding music in the entire history of music, so that's a role I've always aspired to!”
Meggie has a number of other interests and passions that keep her busy, as well! “Outside of theatre, I'm finishing up my final year of a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance at Acadia University, so that and applying for grad school are occupying most of my time right now; yikes!” she says. “I'm also an avid horseback rider, and I compete in dressage with my horse, Jigs!”
Thank you for all your contributions to Quick As A Wink, Meggie! We appreciate all the wonderful work you have done and hope to work with you again soon!
